The modern Christian church is the richest and most information-saturated in history. Yet when measured against the Bible's prophecy of the “end times,” a terrifying picture emerges. We may now be in the midst of a “spiritual tribulation” more dreadful than “physical persecution.”
Revelation 3:14 "And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write,'These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing'--and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked-- 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." ' "
The True Nature of the “Famine of the Word” Amos Prophesied
The prophet Amos wrote about the famine that will occur in the last days.
Amos 8:11 "Behold, the days are coming," says the Lord God, "That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the Lord.
Today, we can read God's Word anytime by opening a Bible app. But where is the “living voice of God” that truly stirs the soul, convicts of sin, and leads to life? Amidst a flood of information, truth alone is running dry. This is the “quiet tribulation” we face.
One Little Denarius of Wheat: The Terror of Spiritual Inflation
The ominous phrase “a measure of wheat for a denarius” appearing in Revelation 6. While it signifies a devastating food crisis, it carries an even deeper spiritual meaning.
- Wheat (The Word of Truth, True Christians): Even if one gives all one's denarius (a day's wages), it is uncertain whether one can obtain a single loaf of life-sustaining bread. To that extent, both those who preach the pure gospel and the souls who follow it have become “rare.”
- Barley (Teachings of Compromise): Even low-value barley commands high prices. In modern churches, people's time and energy are being drained by human-centered success philosophies and comforting teachings (barley).
Even after a thousand years, this “genuine wheat worth a denarius” may still be surprisingly rare.
Christ at the Door in the 21st Century
The church in Laodicea symbolizes this “last generation.” They boast, “I am rich. I have become wealthy,” yet in the Lord's eyes they appear “miserable, pitiful, blind, and naked.” Most shocking is the background to that famous scripture.
In chapter 3, verse 20, Christ is driven out to the door.
This is not an invitation to unbelievers. It is a word for “Christians who have driven Christ out of their own churches.” The 21st-century church is filled with organization, programs, and human enthusiasm, leaving the Lord Jesus—the essential “good shepherd”—waiting outside the door. A flock without a shepherd, even if it tries to bake bread by its own strength, cannot contain the nourishment of life.
The hope that remains: Do not spoil the olive oil and wine.
Yet even in this severe spiritual famine, God has issued one command: “Do not let the olive oil and wine be lost.”
- Olive oil (anointing with the Holy Spirit)
- Wine (the covenant sealed with Christ's blood)
Even in times when the wheat of truth is hard to come by, God's mercy commands us not to let anyone take away our personal communion with the Holy Spirit and our absolute trust in the redemption of the cross.
Dealing with Fake Christians in 2026
Thanks to technological innovations brought about by 21st-century fallen angels and demons, most Christians treat Christianity like entertainment. Since COVID, a trend has spread where Japanese people who notice conspiracy theories dabble in Christianity, shout “Jesus!” to show off, and act like they’re cool Western-style folks who’ve grasped the world’s truth. Now, everywhere you look in Japan, it’s like a candy bar molded in the same shape—ridiculous people endlessly spouting clichéd, half-truths like “Jesus is God! Vaccines are the mark of the beast! Wake up to Flat Earth!”
Isaiah 9:15 The elder and honorable, he is the head; The prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail.
Here it is clearly stated that “the one who teaches falsehood = the tail.” In other words, when “the tail” appears in a spiritual context, it symbolizes a “lowly leader who twists the truth and deceives people.” Next, look at the appearance of the locusts that came up from the bottomless pit in Revelation chapter 9.
Revelation 9:10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months.
This suffering caused by the “scorpion's tail” can be interpreted as referring not merely to physical pain, but to “spiritual agony so intense that the soul is paralyzed by false teachings (poison) and cannot even die.”
Applying the definition from Isaiah to Revelation yields the following:
- Head (Leader): Though it should look to the Lord, in the Laodicean state, humans have become the head.
- Tail (False Prophet): At the periphery or behind the church, it continues to inject scorpion venom (false gospel).
