Babylon the Great

X f W T in

In the interpretation of biblical prophecy, a prominent discourse identifies the modern United States as "Mystery Babylon." By introducing this hypothesis, it becomes possible to systematically identify spirituality originating from the U.S., the degeneration of Christianity, and the structures of various spiritual deceptions. This article examines, from a biblical perspective, how the United States functions as a pseudo-Christian nation bearing the attributes of "Mystery Babylon," hollowing out the true teachings of Christ.

Note: This does not imply exclusivity toward individual, sincere American citizens. Believers of any nationality should be respected. However, the purpose of this post is to examine the theological context of why prophetic texts such as Revelation issue the warning to "come out of her."

1. A Nation with a Christian Majority as a Counterpart to Ancient Israel

In the prophetic context of the Old Testament, the Jewish people were depicted as living within a future prophetic space known as "Babylon." From the Babylonian exile in the 6th century BCE to the early church era of the 1st century, the vast majority of Jews resided physically and culturally in the Babylonian region. Even in the time of Christ, Babylon was a familiar locus for Jewish communities.

Today, the United States holds the largest concentration of Christians who inherit the spiritual lineage of ancient Israel (followed by Brazil and Russia, though the U.S. proportion is prominent). If ancient Israel in the scriptures serves as the "prototype of modern faith communities," the fact that the U.S. is a major settlement of Christians becomes a strong rationale for identifying it as end-time Babylon. Meanwhile, in modern Iraq (the region of ancient Babylon), Christians are extremely few, making it hard to view geographical Iraq as end-time Babylon (Jeremiah 50:8, 25; 51:6, 45; Isaiah 48:20; Revelation 18:4).

Generally, the U.S. is viewed as an enduring global empire and a safe haven for Christianity. However, geopolitically and structurally, it harbors hegemonic and anti-Christian traits. When ancient Israel indulged in self-centered prosperity and drowned in a sense of privilege, Yahweh condemned their hypocrisy and answered the cry of the vulnerable, shattering the regime that arrogantly claimed "peace and safety." Similar symptoms are observable in contemporary American Christianity.

Many modern church organizations lean toward collecting vast donations and spreading feel-good, worldly-benefit doctrines to the masses, enjoying material prosperity. This dilutes Christ's fundamental commandment that "you cannot serve both God and money," amounting to a desecration of the sacred. The wealthy young ruler in the Synoptic Gospels, who kept the law, could be said to have been a more devout Jew than many formal Christians today; yet when asked by Jesus to "sell your possessions and follow me," he could only walk away, confronted by his own material attachment.

Despite boasting a high GDP, the U.S. is the world's largest trade deficit nation, and its energy consumption rate is estimated to be several times that of Japan. Deviating from Christ's ethic of "being content with what we have and sharing what we own," many self-proclaimed Christians in the modern era aspire to excessive prosperity within secular systems, prioritizing fleshly desires and making light of the divine will.

While sincere believers certainly exist within the U.S., from a biblical perspective, institutionalized hypocrisy cannot escape divine judgment. The depictions of judgment in the Book of Revelation mirror the prophetic, divine justice of the Old Testament, strongly suggesting that a nation bearing the banner of Christianity will become the target of God's rebuke due to its "shameless luxury" and "spiritual immorality (necromancy/pharmakeia)."

2. The Deep-Water Port Attributes Encompassed by "Mystery Babylon"

According to Revelation 18:17–19, maritime merchants are depicted witnessing the destruction of Babylon from afar and mourning its collapse. When this end-time judgment strikes, many merchant ships were likely waiting to unload cargo or enter dry docks in Babylon's ports. The fact that navigators and crews are witnesses to its destruction proves that Babylon is a powerful "port city-state." It is described as a trade hub where massive amounts of supplies are gathered from around the world and giant cargo ships come and go (Revelation 18:11–13). Therefore, Mystery Babylon must be a nation possessing deep-water ports capable of accommodating large merchant vessels.

Geopolitically, it is extremely difficult for modern ultra-large container ships or commercial freighters to enter shallow or muddy waterways such as Iraq's Port of Basra. While small-scale vessel traffic is possible, giant transport ships loaded with automobiles and heavy industrial products cannot adapt to Iraq's river and port systems. Iraq's oil exports primarily rely on pipelines leading outside the Persian Gulf, a far cry from the direct entry of large merchant fleets described in the Bible.

This also addresses the viewpoint of "Dispensationalism," which attempts to interpret biblical prophecy entirely literally. Dispensationalists often limit the Babylon appearing in prophecies to geographical Iraq or Jerusalem in Palestine. However, the ruins of ancient Babylon are located about 600 km inland from the Persian Gulf (near Basra). In the description of Revelation 18, sailors "visually" confirm the smoke and destruction of the city. Observing the physical destruction of a city (even if destroyed by modern tactical nukes) from a distance of over 600 km with the naked eye is impossible. The nuance of the text points to vivid eyewitness accounts from close proximity, just as ships are about to dock. Therefore, the interpretation that geographical Iraq is Mystery Babylon lacks the physical consistency of the text—a theoretical miscalculation of Dispensationalism.

Furthermore, around the primary maritime routes to New York—the largest port city in the U.S.—lies an area on Long Island called "Babylon." In other words, the maritime route itself approaching New York from the Atlantic holds the indicator of "Babylon." When Jewish immigrants settled there in 1872, Jewish rabbis prophesied that this would become a new gathering place for the diaspora. True to this background, modern New York has developed into a multi-ethnic, multi-religious nominal Christian metropolis.

3. A Commercial Superpower Controlling Global Economic Wealth

As explicitly shown in Isaiah 47:15, Revelation 17:2, various verses of chapter 18 (3, 9, 11–13, 15, 16, 17–19, 22, 23), and 19:2, Babylon maintains immoral economic ties (economic luxury) with the nations. In other words, Mystery Babylon must be a "global superpower" positioned at the core of the global economy. At her collapse, merchants lament that "no one buys our cargoes anymore," depicting the malfunction of the international trade system. This proves a structure where nations around the world reaped economic benefits through Babylon's massive material imports, becoming completely dependent on her consumer market. Which modern nation is the world's largest sinkhole of wealth, continuing to run massive trade deficits? Not Iraq, but the United States itself.

The list of commodities in Revelation 18:11–13 includes precious metals like gold, silver, and bronze. Today, Wall Street (such as the New York Mercantile Exchange), which serves as the central indicator for international trade in gold, silver, and crude oil, executes transactions of unprecedented scale compared to any other market. Since the unfreezing of gold trading in 1974, commodity liquidity centered around the U.S. market has expanded to an incomparable scale. Additionally, Chicago (the Chicago Board of Trade), a port city overlooking Lake Michigan, functions as the global center for futures trading in grains and livestock appearing on the same list. In current geopolitics, Iraq holds no such influence to dictate the international economy. If Iraq were to physically withdraw from the international society, the foundations of the global economy would not collapse.

However, if the U.S. market were to suddenly vanish, global financial systems and banking networks would instantly paralyze, and international trade would halt immediately. If the U.S.—the core of global demand—lost its function as a buyer, export-led economies in foreign countries would suffer a fatal blow. The system of the United States, which is a powerful promoter of free trade systems and continues to maintain structural trade deficits through excessive consumption, matches the biblical description perfectly.

The defining characteristic of Mystery Babylon portrayed in Revelation is not merely that of a producer nation, but its nature as an "import superpower that consumes the wealth of international society to exhaustion." The reason her destruction is mourned by merchants worldwide is that she was their primary market, and the Bible defines her excessive materialism and consumption as "shameful luxury worthy of divine judgment." From this perspective as well, Iraq—a developing nation struggling with ongoing economic hardship—can hardly be expected to shoulder the role of the Babylon that drives the global economy. We must recognize that the "eschatological economic superpower" pointed to by the Bible is the United States, which has pushed materialism to its peak while hoisting the signboard of Christian spirit.

4. A Source of Cultural Entertainment and Commodity Production

Revelation 18:22 describes how, as a result of divine judgment, "entertainment, arts, and industrial production" within Babylon are completely cut off. This implies that the city prior to its destruction was a source of entertainment, popular music, and advanced trends. In this regard, Iraq, belonging to the cultural Islamic sphere, leaves no room for application. However, the United States exports secular hedonism to the entire world through Hollywood movies and the global music industry (pop culture), placing nations under its spiritual influence. Modern trends and rhythm-stimulating emotions (such as parts of commercial Christian music, including Hillsong) sometimes strip away the "modesty and piety" required by the Bible, running the risk of transforming faith into emotional romance.

While the praise of the twenty-four elders in Revelation is filled with solemn and transcendent piety ("Holy, holy, holy"), the excessive staging and frenzy seen in modern U.S. mega-churches tend to pursue "signs and miracles" over objective Logos, creating a breeding ground for deception. Flamboyant decoration and theatrical methods do not necessarily guarantee true faith; rather, they invite the penetration of worldly spirits. The fact that the United States is the global supplier of such unhealthy entertainment industries, alongside the hardware and software supporting them, demonstrates the gravity of its cultural guilt.

5. Governance via Geopolitical Hegemony and Overwhelming Military Might

In Jeremiah 50:23, Babylon is described as "the hammer of the whole earth." Historically, empires such as Persia, Greece, and Rome established international order (Pax) through overwhelming military might. Mystery Babylon exists as an extension of these hegemonic structures. Since the end of the Cold War, the U.S. has been referred to in international politics and mass media as the "world's police." Iraq possesses no such global power projection capability. Furthermore, a close examination of the Hebrew original of Isaiah 18:1–2 reveals metaphorical expressions symbolizing military might: the description of a "land of whirring wings" can be interpreted as a metaphor for modern "air power," while the mention of "sending papyrus boats across the water" suggests "naval power (power projection capability)" deploying military force to distant places. Just as powerful naval nations in antiquity forced friendly relations upon others or raised signals for intimidation, no nation other than the U.S. can deploy carrier strike groups on a global scale today. The structure of maintaining both air and naval power to the ultimate limit to coerce other nations is precisely the military doctrine of the United States.

6. Extreme Materialism and Nighttime Consumer Culture (Examined from the Greek Original)

As noted earlier, the lifestyle of Mystery Babylon centers on "materialism" (Isaiah 47:1-8; Revelation 17:4-5; 18:2-24). This does not apply to Iraq, but fits the United States, which boasts the world's largest share in energy and resource consumption (Jeremiah 51:13; Revelation 18:2-19). Recorded in the scriptures are carnal and material attachments to wealth (Isaiah 47:8; Revelation 18:14), craving for higher living standards (Isaiah 47:1; Revelation 18:14), and the nature of circulating decadent role models worldwide to captivate other nations (Revelation 17:2; 18:3, 14, 23).

Here, let us examine the translations "dainty" and "goodly" appearing in Revelation 18:14 by going back beyond universal interpretations to the Greek original. The Greek word corresponding to "dainty" in the text implies not merely refinement, but frequently the nuance of "endless banquets, insatiable gluttony, and festivals accompanied by drunkenness." Furthermore, the word translated as "goodly" is the Greek lampra ("radiant"), which is also the etymological root of the English word "lamp" (artificial light). In other words, the Bible can be read as prophesying the characteristic of Mystery Babylon as "a 24-hour festival of consumption and immorality colored by nighttime artificial lighting." The sights of Las Vegas and the megalopolises known as cities that never sleep in the U.S. embody this "infatuation with night illumination and decadent hedonism," a secular culture that even entangles many Christians.

Linked with this excessive nightlife culture, the spread of drug addiction has become a serious social problem in the U.S. The fact that Isaiah 47:9, 12 and Revelation 18:23 cite "sorcery" (from the Greek original pharmakeia, including the meaning of drugs and pharmacy) as the essence of Mystery Babylon's sin is deeply suggestive.

Furthermore, as Revelation 18:14 and 22 indicate, Mystery Babylon exports these harmful habits and social norms of its own making overseas as soft power, causing global cultural pollution. Discourses professing a "faith in Jesus" devoid of inner substance while maintaining a secular lifestyle are theologically invalid. The difficulty for corrupt capitalists (or systems aimed solely at accumulating wealth) to inherit the kingdom of God is a fundamental principle of the Bible (Revelation 18:15), and high population density and the maldistribution of excessive wealth (Revelation 17:1, 15) compound their guilt.

Additionally, as noted in Jeremiah 50:16, 51:13, and Revelation 17:1, 15, Mystery Babylon is a "nation constituted by widespread immigration." According to Isaiah 18:2, from its founding to its developmental history, it is an entity watched with a kind of wonder and envy (symbolized by the American Dream) by international society, while simultaneously incurring deep jealousy and backlash (anti-American sentiment) from foreign nations. As Jeremiah 51:1 and Isaiah 47:9 point out, it is a system of structural rebellion against divine order, concealing opaque occultism behind rational governance.

The structure combining the aspect of a "cosmopolitan (multicultural coexistence) advanced nation" in Jeremiah 50:32 with that of "massive agricultural productivity (the world's great granary)" in 50:16 also matches the geopolitical reality of the U.S. (the coexistence of agribusiness and cities). Descriptions of "tower-like high-rise buildings (skylines)" found in Isaiah 13:22 also evoke the same nation. Revelation 17:18 and 18:15 back up the fact that it is not merely a regional state, but an international megalopolis.

Furthermore, Mystery Babylon is described as "sitting on many waters" (Jeremiah 51:13, 36, 42; Isaiah 18:1, 2). Following the interpretive principles of Revelation, "waters" signify the mixture of many peoples, nations, and languages (Revelation 17:15), matching the current reality of the U.S. as a multi-ethnic nation ("melting pot," "salad bowl") where people from all over the world flow into and assimilate within its hegemonic system.

The international praise conveyed in Jeremiah 50:12, Revelation 17:18–19, and 18:18 ("Has there ever been a city like this great city?"), as well as the "absolute security from the threat of homeland invasion (geopolitical superiority protected by two oceans)" shown in Isaiah 47:5, 8 and Revelation 18:7, are also attributes of the U.S. The description of "defense networks reaching up to the heavens" in Jeremiah 51:53 evokes modern space security (the establishment of the Space Force and NASA's defense initiatives), showing the height of human technological arrogance. Regarding the adoption of occult symbolism among political elites (historical involvement with fraternities like Freemasonry and orientation toward the NWO: New World Order), portents can also be found in Isaiah 47:9 and elsewhere. The "dwelling place of demons" specified in Revelation 18:2 refers to a hegemonic system placed under the rule of the spiritual prince of this age; just like the "prince of Persia" in the Book of Daniel, there is a structural intervention of Satan in every era's world superpower.

7. "Libertas" (The Statue of Liberty) and the Genealogy of Babylon's Ishtar Worship

Revelation 17 features a "Great Harlot" clothed in scarlet, holding a cup filled with abominable acts of fornication. This entity is regarded as the spiritual matrix of apostasy ruling over many waters (the nations). In religious history, the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar is known as an entity that structured sacred immorality (temple prostitution) linked with fertility worship. This pagan genealogy transformed across ages and was inherited in the Roman Empire as the goddess of liberty, "Libertas."

Sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, who designed the Statue of Liberty—the symbol of the United States—adopted the design of this classical Roman "Libertas." From a historical-theological perspective, the archetype of ancient Babylonian Ishtar worship can be viewed as having revived through Rome as a medium, officially registered as a national symbol. The ancient Greek original for the description "abominable things" appearing in Revelation 17:4–5 is bdelugma, which etymologically includes meanings such as "smelling foul, an idol to be shunned." In other words, from a sacred viewpoint, structures symbolizing worldly prosperity are nothing more than systems emitting the foul odor of spiritual immorality.

This system of spiritual decay camouflages its essence by hoisting the signboard of Christianity. The secular ideology of the "American Dream"—the symbol of Western material success—circulates globally and regulates the minds of many people; yet in the prophetic context, this is equivalent to the cup of temptation of Mystery Babylon. The military power deployed by the hegemonic nation and its alliance network symbolize the physical power of the "beast coming up out of the sea" in the Bible, and cannot escape criticism that it is involved in various structural forms of violence (such as the generation of artificial crises or instigation of regional conflicts) behind the scenes of international politics.

As repeatedly pointed out, modern geographical spaces such as Iraq and Jerusalem do not meet the requirements of such global economic and military domination. Eschatology businesses obsessed only with millennial earthly kingdoms and formal leaders sing false prophecies about "Babylon = Iraq" to evade their own prophetic responsibilities and maintain the status quo; however, returning to the essence of faith requires recognizing the apostate nature of our own system.

The biblical condemnation against "nominal Christians" who receive divine revelation yet deny its ethical substance is more severe than that against unbelievers. Therefore, Western postmodern Christianity faces a time requiring solemn repentance, casting aside its self-deception. While the elucidation of these macro-deceptive structures has already been widely discussed in English by cutting-edge theologians in the U.S., the role of this article is to structurally present the reality of prophecy based on original language interpretation within the Japanese context.

8. The Permanent Desolation of Ancient Babylon and Modern Geopolitical Dynamics

In geopolitical history, the prophecies issued by Isaiah and Jeremiah against ancient Babylon stating that "no inhabitants will dwell there ever again" have been fulfilled as historical fact. The site of the ancient Babylonian ruins in modern Iraq is an archaeological wilderness and does not function as a permanent settlement city. This fact proves the validity of the biblical words while simultaneously showing that the end-time "Mystery Babylon" is not the revival of the physical Babylon of the past, but a spiritual and structural "concept" appearing in another spacetime.

Therefore, interpretations attempting to revert the prophecy of Mystery Babylon simply back to geographical Iraq are untenable. Furthermore, current trends around modern Jerusalem do not meet the requirements of the "Great City" in Revelation, as it is neither an import superpower driving the global consumer economy nor a superpower unilaterally controlling the world militarily. Current Zionist systems and theological dependencies on specific bloodline identities are merely facets of secular power struggles criticized by the Bible.

Pseudo-theologians who justify their own nationalism and material security conceal the fact that their nation is the target of biblical judgment, preaching the Prosperity Gospel; but this is a distortion of prophecy. Looking back at history, the U.S. brought even the territorial domain of ancient Babylon under its own hegemony through military interventions such as the Iraq War in 2003. The historical realm governed by Nebuchadnezzar was effectively incorporated under the global governance (neoliberal market system) led by the U.S. As history shows from the Spanish-American War in the 19th century onward with Guam, Puerto Rico, and other trusteeships/military bases, imperial systems subordinate peripheral regions and maintain structures exploiting them as the foundation of their own prosperity.

Conclusion

Examining the prophetic matrix of the Old and New Testaments reveals that the true nature of "Mystery Babylon" is not merely an abstract religious organization, but manifests as a "national system (the Great City)" equipped with clear physical and structural attributes. The physical descriptions of ports, the deployment of air and naval power, the coexistence of high-rise architecture, and its nature as a global consumption and import market all converge on the geopolitical reality known as the modern United States.

The nation fulfills the attributes of the "second beast coming up out of the earth" in Revelation and the function of the "Jezebel-like harlot (false spirituality)" leading nations into economic and cultural intoxication. Its structural guilt stems from what the Bible calls "necromancy/pharmakeia (capitalized deception)" and "shameless luxury (excessive consumption)," and its essence is institutionalized hypocrisy.

This Babylonian system has permeated deep into the foundations of modern Christianity. While commercialistic preaching by television evangelists utilizing media and "false revivals" mistaking emotional frenzy for the work of the Holy Spirit expand globally, sectarian factions like "Jehovah's Witnesses," which end up in formal legalism ignoring biblical contexts and original word interpretations, also exist—functioning as divisive operations blocking truth from people.

The essence of Satan's strategy lies in the clever concealment of producing substance-less secular Christians on one hand while hardening believers through dogmatic sectarianism on the other, allowing neither side to perceive true holiness (the righteousness of Yahweh). Much of modern Christianity has been hollowed out by the proliferation of this "tares," and its root lies in assimilation with Babylonian values (worldly gain and materialism). Mystery Babylon has degraded the pure gospel of Christ into a secular system. In bloated church businesses, discourses teaching "material blessings through offerings" are a clear transgression against the spirit of the gospel.

Remaining identified as disciples of Christ while internalizing these secular trends and structural hypocrisies is theologically impossible. Believers are called to critically recognize this macro-structure and make wise judgments in segregating their spiritual footing.
