False christianity

Did you know that amidst the long history of Christianity, a "novel interpretation" emerging in the mid-19th century continues to cast a profound shadow over the modern Christian world, as well as global political and economic thought?

At the center of this is John Nelson Darby, widely regarded as the founder of dispensationalism. At first glance, the system he constructed resembles a "profound decoding of scriptural mysteries." In reality, however, it hollows out Christianity’s authentic message of "love and solidarity with one's neighbor," rationalizing selfish egoism and a survival-of-the-fittest mentality under the convenient pretext that "this is the age of grace."

In this piece, we delve into how this Darbyist theology distorted salvation into a "tool for self-justification."

The Justification of Selfish Egoism Under the Guise of "Grace"

What is the true gospel of Christianity? It is the communal solidarity demonstrated by Jesus Christ—rescuing the vulnerable, loving one's neighbor, and walking together to heal a world full of suffering.

However, the combination of Darby’s interpretation of the "Age of Grace (the Church Age)" and the concept of the "secret rapture" gave birth to a terrifying ideological distortion. It translates to: "Since this is now the age of grace, human actions and ethical responsibilities are no longer questioned. No matter how selfishly you live, as long as you believe, God will overlook your faults and grant unconditional forgiveness."

  • "It doesn't matter what happens to others, as long as you escape to heaven as a 'chosen winner'."
  • "You can look down with aloof detachment upon the fools (losers) left behind in a ruined world."

Originally, God’s "grace" should inspire gratitude and humility. Here, however, it was subverted into an indulgence to justify selfishness: "No matter how egoistically I live, I alone am guaranteed an absolute safe escape." The messy, hands-on Christian ethics of "improving society" and "living in solidarity with others"—along with earthly social responsibility—were abandoned. Instead, a neoliberal, competitive capitalist ego of "how efficiently one can escape hardship and win" was endorsed, paradoxically, as "evidence of deep faith."

Heretical Roots and Rapid Expansion in Financial Capital and America

There is strong evidence suggesting that the roots of this pre-tribulation rapture theory—whereby individuals are whisked away into the air—were influenced by an occult vision experienced by a Scottish woman named Margaret MacDonald around 1830. It was a 19th-century novelty completely absent from traditional Christian history.

This "ego-justifying theology" was subsequently explosively popularized in America by the theologian Cyrus Scofield. His Scofield Reference Bible (1909) forcefully drove this interpretation into the masses by placing his personal commentary side-by-side with the biblical text.

Interestingly, persistent theories suggest that Scofield’s work was backed by financial support from Wall Street international financiers—such as power broker Jacob Schiff—and other shadowy figures who would later orchestrate the establishment of the Federal Reserve (FRB). It has been argued that this doctrine was propagated with massive funding like propaganda, precisely because it suited the ruling class to make ordinary people abandon social reform and the pursuit of justice, retreating instead into the shell of individualism under the banner of "grace."

Furthermore, prestigious educational institutions such as Moody Bible College and Dallas Seminary adopted this theology as standard curriculum, mass-producing clergy who supported dispensationalism and laying the groundwork for America's massive Christian Right, including megachurches.

Modern Tragedies Born from a Distorted Philosophy

The toxic poison that transformed salvation into "the justification of ego" and a "dog-eat-dog self-responsibility race" has inflicted severe harm not only on individuals but on international society as well.

1. Apathy Toward Environmental Destruction and Social Inequality: This mindset fostered a cold cynicism that dismisses environmental conservation, the correction of social inequality, and diplomatic efforts as "futile struggles," rationalized by the belief that "the world is going to ruin anyway, and I will be lifted to heaven by grace, so it doesn't matter."

2. Endorsement of War and Human Rights Abuses (Christian Zionism): Because adherents interpret the reconstruction of the earthly state of Israel as the countdown to their own heavenly ascension, they eagerly cheer on the suffering of local Palestinians and the escalation of conflict as "prophetic fulfillment," giving rise to a distorted political force.

Reclaiming the True Gospel

Darby’s dispensationalism is a self-serving indulgence wearing a Christian mask, exploiting God’s grace to legitimize "human ego and arrogance." The image of Jesus Christ—who loved the world and laid down his life for the oppressed—is entirely absent there.

We must discard the shallow delusion of "becoming the sole winner who escapes into the skies," and instead choose to walk in the mud of the present world, loving our neighbors—is this not the path truly demanded by authentic Christianity?
